Vic Fangio is expected to speak with 49ers about defensive coordinator job

Jan 31, 2023 at 1:48 PM--

It was reported that Vic Fangio was headed to the Miami Dolphins. Of course, the coach denied that any deal had been finalized, with many speculating that he might be interested in the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator job.

That job opened on Tuesday with the Houston Texans hiring DeMeco Ryans to a six-year deal to be their next head coach.

According to Josina Anderson, Fangio is expected to talk with the 49ers about their vacancy. Others are also pursuing the coach.

San Francisco will also interview Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks and has requested permission to speak with Washington Commanders defensive backs coach Chris Harris.

Fangio served as the 49ers' defensive coordinator for four seasons (2011-14) under then-head coach Jim Harbaugh. Fangio's defenses ranked in the top five in each season with the team (No. 4 in 2011, No. 3 in 2012, No. 5 in 2013, and No. 5 in 2014).

Details emerge on LB Fred Warner's restructured deal with 49ers

On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers created $9.5 million in salary cap space by restructuring the contract of linebacker Fred Warner. The deal remains a five-year one worth $95.225 million, and the player remains signed through the 2026 season. However, much of Warner's 2023 base salary has been converted to a signing bonus, paying him that amount immediately but allowing the 49ers to spread the salary-cap impact of the amount throughout the length of the contract. In Warner's case, the impact of the signing bonus will go beyond 2026, as the 49ers added a void year in 2027. Warner's 2023 salary cap number reduces from about $18.5 million to $9.049
