As expected, Kyle Shanahan confirms Christian McCaffrey ‘not a rental’ for 49ers

Oct 21, 2022 at 8:50 AM--

When trade rumors were circulating, there was talk that former Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey could be a nice one-year pickup for a Super Bowl contender looking to add another explosive weapon. Maybe a team like the Buffalo Bills. After all, his remaining salary for 2022 was low, and none of his future money is guaranteed.

This morning, Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said he received three firm offers for McCaffrey. Trade talks were complicated by teams either not owning a first-round pick or, for those that had one, being unwilling to give it up.

Shockingly, it ended up being the San Francisco 49ers finalizing a trade for the versatile running back. As soon as the terms of the deal were revealed, it was clear that McCaffrey was not a one-year rental. San Francisco sent second-, third-, and fourth-round picks in 2023, plus a fifth-rounder in 2024, to the Panthers to acquire him. You don't surrender that much draft capital for a rental.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR this morning. He was asked to confirm that the 49ers envisioned McCaffrey being on the roster next season and possibly beyond.

"Yes," Shanahan responded on the Murph & Mac show. "This is not a rental. I mean, that's the stuff that is tough too where we did that with Emmanuel (Sanders) in the year (2019) we were trying to make the run. We didn't want it to be a rental. I mean, he was someone we were really hoping to re-sign the next year. But you realize, just going through that, I realized how difficult that is.

"So that was something that you think about in this time. And that was something that, at least for me and definitely John (Lynch), that was so much more enticing, knowing if we got him, just contractually and stuff, he's going to be here. We don't have to be risking this come February."

McCaffrey is under contract through the 2025 season.

On Monday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan jumped on a conference call with reporters and provided several injury updates following Sunday's 19-12 Divisional Round playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys. The coach mentioned three players. Two were already known, based on post-game information. However, the third is a new development. First, the known injuries. Charles Omenihu suffered an oblique strain that briefly forced the defensive end to exit the game. Shanahan says Omenihu is day-to-day leading to Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Running back Christian McCaffrey revealed that he fought through some bothersome calf

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey won't practice on Thursday, which means he'll have missed two consecutive practices due to a calf contusion. It's something everyone around the NFL media world is keeping an eye on this week as the team prepares for its NFC Championship Game clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. Don't expect a little injury to keep McCaffrey out on Sunday, though. Reporters asked the running back if there was any chance in his mind that he wouldn't play against the Eagles. "Zero," McCaffrey quickly and confidently responded. The 49ers traded for McCaffrey on October 20, 2022. He has started each of the team's past 12 games, including these last two playoff matchups. The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their NFC Championship Game contest against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Aside from tackle Trent Williams returning from his veteran day off, nothing changed compared to Wednesday's practice participation report. Two 49ers running backs sat out Wednesday's practice due to injuries. Nothing changed for Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell on Thursday. Neither participated in the afternoon session. However, McCaffrey was on hand for the team's walk-through before practice. How concerned is the 49ers head coach about his running backs' statuses? "Same concerns I had yesterday," Kyle Shanahan said. One person who isn't

Christian McCaffrey returns to practice ahead of 49ers-Eagles; Elijah Mitchell still sidelined

There probably wasn't much concern inside the San Francisco 49ers building surrounding running back Christian McCaffrey's availability for Sunday's NFC Championship Game matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. When asked about the chances of not playing this weekend, McCaffrey responded, "Zero." The media has kept an eye on the situation because McCaffrey missed the first two practices this week due to a calf contusion. The running back was back on the practice field on Friday, though, indicating he will be ready to go against the Eagles. The bad news is that running back Elijah Mitchell, who also missed Wednesday's and Thursday's practices, was not on the
