49ers’ third QB options for this season and beyond

Sep 19, 2022 at 8:23 AM--

Brock Purdy is now one injury away from starting. While the San Francisco 49ers have expressed a lot of confidence in the last overall pick in this year's draft, having the rookie lead a championship-caliber roster probably isn't ideal.
Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is the starter moving forward following the season-ending injury to Trey Lance, last year's No. 3 overall pick. Lance will undergo surgery today on the broken ankle suffered in the first quarter of Sunday's 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Purdy hasn't even been active in San Francisco's two games this season. However, he may suit up for Sunday's matchup against the Denver Broncos. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk was the 49ers' emergency quarterback against the Seahawks had anything happened to Garoppolo.

"I told Jimmy in the locker room (at halftime), I said, 'Hey man, don't make me play quarterback today,' Juszczyk said. "And he promised he was going to do everything he could to not let that happen."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that the 49ers need to add another quarterback.

"Whether it's a third or whether it's on the practice squad, but we need a third guy," Shanahan said.

What are his options? Pro Football Focus' Doug Kyed weighed in on that this morning.

"The 49ers' options include current free agents like Cam Newton and A.J. McCarron, trading for a player like [Mason] Rudolph or signing a player off another team's practice squad," Kyed wrote. "They cannot sign quarterback Josh Johnson off the Denver Broncos' practice squad since the two teams play next week, but Cleveland Browns practice squad quarterback Josh Rosen has a history in San Francisco, and the Green Bay Packers' Danny Etling, the Seattle Seahawks' Sean Mannion, the Minnesota Vikings' David Blough, and the New York Jets' Chris Streveler play in similar offenses."

This season, having Garoppolo as an insurance plan has helped San Francisco avoid disaster. But what about next season? Garoppolo is scheduled to become a free agent after this season, and San Francisco may want someone with experience backing up Lance, who will be coming off his injury.

"There's a litany of quarterbacks with starting experience set to hit free agency next offseason," wrote Kyed, "including Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Teddy Bridgewater, Daniel Jones, Mason Rudolph, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Flacco, Case Keenum, Geno Smith, Taylor Heinicke, Gardner Minshew, Drew Lock, and Andy Dalton. Former 49ers signal-callers Nick Mullens, C.J. Beathard, and Nate Sudfeld also are set to be free agents."

With Lance sidelined for the rest of 2022, the 49ers have options to weigh. We'll probably hear about a move sooner rather than later.

'Third and Jauan': 49ers WR Jennings steps up again in the clutch during win over Saints

By Kirk Larrabee

49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings has had a quieter year statistically than some may have expected, considering where he was at the end of the 2021 season. But just as he did in 2021, Jennings stepped up in the clutch Sunday, giving the 49ers multiple huge plays while helping them secure a 13-0 win over the New Orleans Saints. After catching 16 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns over the final five games of the 2021 regular season, Jennings entered this weekend with 30 catches for 220 yards and zero touchdowns for 2022. But on Sunday he caught six passes for 49 yards while hauling in the game's only touchdown. Jennings also made a key third down catch on the game's final drive that helped run out the clock and seal the win. Jennings' clutch performance on

Every game is a home game for the 49ers, and it's both by design and 30 years in the making. Late last month, the 3-win San Francisco 49ers headed south to face the 3-win Los Angeles Rams in a pivotal NFC West matchup. The Niners' fourth victory of the 2022 NFL regular season was abnormal on numerous fronts, highlighted by a "Trifecta" performance by San Francisco's new running back Christian McCaffrey, who threw a first-half touchdown pass before scoring on the ground and through the air in the second half. The Rams had no answer for McCaffrey or quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who played his best game of the season, as he led the 49ers

Kyle Shanahan impressed with Jimmy Garoppolo and 49ers' play in recent weeks

Kyle Shanahan was feeling good on Monday night. The head coach's San Francisco 49ers won their third consecutive game, with the latest being a 38-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in an international matchup in Mexico City. The 49ers are getting hot, and have become a favorite to make some noise down the stretch and in the NFC playoffs, assuming things continue to trend upward for the team. "I felt real good about the guys," Shanahan told reporters after the game. "[The players] had a great week of practice. They've really been gelling these last three weeks. I feel like it's gotten a little better each week, and it was nice to put a full game together today." Players are also feeling the momentum build up. "We're definately ready to
