49ers coach Kyle Shanahan’s hilarious response to Mike McDaniel’s hygiene admission: “He’s definitely not lying”

Sep 15, 2022 at 4:14 PM--

Mike McDaniel's hygiene was in the headlines on Wednesday. The first-year head coach for the Miami Dolphins shared that he would often go from game days until late in the week without showering while serving as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers.

McDaniel doesn't do that now because, as a head coach, he has to meet with too many people regularly.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined KNBR on Thursday afternoon and was asked about his former assistant's comments.

"God, that's almost a setup because I would love to just go off on this like we were hanging out," Shanahan responded on the Tolbert & Copes show. "He's definitely not lying. That's accurate.

"It's funny. That stuff happens, though. I'm not saying necessarily the showering stuff, but when you're a coordinator, and you don't have a position and stuff, I mean, you're just sitting in your room so concerned with certain things.

"And it does change when that's how you've done it for a while, and now, all of a sudden, you've got to go talk in front of the team, you've got to go to a press conference, you've got to go speak to the owner. It's a little different if the head coach is walking around looking homeless every single day like he hasn't showered.

"I'm not trying to offend anybody on that, but it's something that you do got to think of, which I'm sure he just started thinking about it once this season started."

The San Francisco 49ers are set to host the Miami Dolphins in a reunion between head coach Kyle Shanahan and his protégé Mike McDaniel. Shanahan has known McDaniel for 17 years. The two started working together with the Houston Texans in 2006 and were together for all but two years until the Dolphins hired the former 49ers offensive coordinator in February to be their head coach. Is Sunday's game more interesting for Shanahan, knowing that he is going against his former assistant? "Not really because I think we know their offense very well," Shanahan told NBC Sports Bay Area. "The defense knows their offense very well. It's very similar to ours. They know our defense very well. That's all Mike's gone against, so there's no secrets
