“Everything has definitely slowed down”: 49ers QB Trey Lance more comfortable in 2nd season

Aug 5, 2022 at 2:26 PM--

KNBR was live at the San Francisco 49ers facility in Santa Clara and had an opportunity to speak with Trey Lance. The second-year quarterback feels more acclimated to the area and the team following a whirlwind 2021 campaign.

"I know where all the Chipotles are nearby and everything like that," Lance said jokingly. "For me, I just feel so much more comfortable. I know the guys in the locker room so much better. I'm obviously in a very different position than I was last year, and it's just been a ton of fun."

A "very different position" is correct. Last season, Lance served as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup, learning from the veteran quarterback. He has been handed the reins this offseason and will be the team's QB1 come Week 1.

Many were underwhelmed by Lance's rookie season. Part of that is because the quarterback started just two games. However, even Lance's small sample size of playing time failed to wow anyone. It's worth remembering, though, that the quarterback had to learn a new way to grip the football to compensate for an injured finger.

"We started [correcting the grip] back at the end of March, after taking a little bit of time away after the season," Lance explained. "Went to gripping a football again. ... I learned to throw and finish off my middle finger versus my pointer finger. Kind of just reteaching that, and it didn't take near as long as I thought. ... By the time I got back to OTA, Phase 1, I wasn't even thinking about it anymore."

Lance feels more comfortable on the football field too. As the starting quarterback, he is getting most of the practice reps now. Soon, he'll be out with the starters during preseason, better prepared to face opposing defenses. Mentally, he has made significant leaps compared to last season.

"I'm in a whole other place," Lance admitted. "I can't even imagine going back to last year. But yeah, everything has definitely slowed down."

The excitement for the upcoming season continues to build for players and fans alike. The 49ers are talented enough to overcome any growing pains Lance might encounter in his first season as a starter.

"We're going to be ready to go," Lance said. "I'm excited for this whole team. We've got a great group of guys again. It's going to be a ton of fun."

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers comfortable with O-line situation, center battle

By David Bonilla
Aug 5

The odds of the San Francisco 49ers signing a veteran center like J.C. Tretter appear to be dwindling. Barring any injuries, the team seems content heading into the 2022 season with the players on the current roster who are competing for roles along the offensive line's interior. "We're very good with the people in our building," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday. "When you talk about a veteran, which everyone does, that just means it's always a lot easier when you've seen someone do it for 17 games. But no one does do that until you give them the opportunity. We see in practice every day now—we saw it last year—that we have guys in our building who are definitely capable of it. Now it's about getting into those games. We'll try to give them some

49ers-Packers: Kyle Shanahan offers day-after-game evaluations of Trey Lance, Samuel Womack, Trey Sermon

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has had a chance to watch the film from Friday night's 28-21 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. It was an opportunity for a lot of young players to shine. But, more importantly, it was a chance for them to gain valuable experience. Second-year quarterback Trey Lance, the team's starter, finished the night 4-of-5 for 92 yards, a touchdown, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. He was among the highest-graded 49ers players by Pro Football Focus. After reviewing the film, Shanahan said that his evaluation of the 22-year-old quarterback isn't much different from what he said last night. "He did a

Rapoport: 49ers' talent can carry Trey Lance through 'up and down' season

By David Bonilla
Aug 8

The San Francisco 49ers are off today. The team returns to the practice field tomorrow. Anyone that follows the team even somewhat closely knows that second-year quarterback Trey Lance has had an up and down training camp. That was to be expected. This offseason is his first taking the majority of the quarterback snaps. Plus, Lance is going against what many expect to be one of this season's top defenses and has had starters in and out of the offense while doing so. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport joined the PatMcAfee Show and shared what he's heard about and witnessed from last year's No. 3 overall pick. While none of it is new information, Rapoport still discussed Lance's "up and down" training camp. McAfee hilariously expressed shock as if the report
