After discussing the decision with his camp, Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson shocked the world on Friday by deciding to waive his no-trade clause to the Cleveland Browns to be traded there in exchange for three first-round picks, a third-round pick, and a fourth-round pick, with the Browns receiving a fifth-round selection in addition to Watson as well.
With the Watson domino finally falling, it's now time for the 49ers to move their own veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, to one of the remaining quarterback-needy franchises: the Indianapolis Colts or the Carolina Panthers.
However, as there has been throughout this entire frenzy, complications have risen as Baker Mayfield, Cleveland's current quarterback, is expected to be moved as well, with his desire being the Indianapolis Colts. Luckily for the 49ers, the Browns may be wary of moving Mayfield within the conference. The Seattle Seahawks are a potential destination, as they've held internal discussions about acquiring the fifth-year veteran for 2022.'
For fans inquiring about the New Orleans Saints, they're expected to be in the mix for Jameis Winston once again, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, who has been their fallback option all along. Remember, the Saints owe Winston $3 million in dead cap for 2022 and $1.5 million in dead cap for 2023, increasing the inclination to bring back their starter from last season.
Where does this leave Jimmy Garoppolo?
Still the most valuable quarterback on the market, Garoppolo transitions from the back-burner option to the front-running trade candidate, as his combination of intangibles and understandable play make him an intriguing option for teams eyeing the playoffs.
The Indianapolis Colts are still the expected front-runners for Garoppolo, since they have the capital to trade for the veteran, as well as the cap space to absorb his contract.
However, be on the lookout for Matt Ryan, who could potentially want out of Atlanta following the situation with Deshaun Watson, although that hasn't yet been expected. If Ryan joins the open market, Garoppolo will once again be on the back-burner, and teams will likely pursue Ryan, especially since he'd actually be the cheaper option for 2022 with a $23.75 million salary.
The offseason continues to provide crazy moves, and it shouldn't stop with the quarterbacks still available via trade.
