Before Wednesday's practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters. The team is preparing to face the NFC East champion Dallas Cowboys this weekend in the opening round of the playoffs.
Shanahan says quarterback
Jimmy Garoppolo, who is still dealing with a right thumb injury, will be limited in practice. However, his starting left tackle,
Trent Williams (elbow), will not practice. The coach is still hoping that Williams can play on Sunday against the Cowboys.
"Trent is better today than he was on Sunday," Shanahan said.
The 49ers are opening the practice window for running back Trenton Cannon, who suffered a concussion on December 5 and was placed on injured reserve on December 11.
Others who will not practice on Wednesday are running back
Elijah Mitchell (knee) and tight end
George Kittle (vet day).
Linebackers
Dre Greenlaw (groin),
Azeez Al-Shaair (knee) and Marcell Harris (Achilles), safeties
Talanoa Hufanga (knee) and Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder), and punter
Mitch Wishnowsky (concussion) will be limited.

Will 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo practice once he's cleared?
Now that the Deebo Samuel drama is currently in hibernation, and the "Trey Lance isn't ready" tour has slowed some, Jimmy Garoppolo is back in the headlines. Not for any reason other than it's Jimmy Garoppolo.
I know, I know. You're sick of hearing his name. Trust me. I'm sick of hearing it and spelling it. But until the San Francisco 49ers trade Garoppolo, name him the starter, declare that Lance is the starter or decree that the beginning of training camp will be the dawning of a new era in the 49ers' quarterback room, we will continue to hear about him.
So until there is a mutual parting of the ways, writers will write about him, content creators will talk about him, reporters will continue to speculate, and the national media will continue to make things
The 49ers are content with Jimmy Garoppolo on their roster
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch told KNBR this past Monday that the organization appeared close to trading starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo earlier in the offseason, but those talks came to a screeching halt when the decision was made for the 30-year old signal-caller to have surgery on his injured shoulder.
Lynch later mentioned that the team continued to have dialogue surrounding Garoppolo during the NFL Draft, but it appeared teams were hoping to secure his services at a discounted price. Lynch also mentioned that teams typically don't rush out to trade for a player following surgery until they know they've made a full recovery. To me, it almost felt like
Richard Sherman: I think Jimmy Garoppolo will be with the 49ers during training camp
We know Jimmy Garoppolo isn't going anywhere until he fully recovers from his offseason shoulder surgery. Most have accepted that. The San Francisco 49ers aren't releasing him. By not trading him by the end of the draft, the 49ers showed they are willing to wait out the situation and see if a trade partner emerges after late June or early July, when the team expects the quarterback to start throwing again.
Nick Wagoner of ESPN recently stated that once Garoppolo recovers, the 49ers will again get on the phones and try to generate interest in the 30-year-old quarterback. Of course, that's not
Breer: Jimmy Garoppolo's 49ers fate dependent on Trey Lance's offseason development
Jimmy Garoppolo has remained on the San Francisco 49ers roster far longer than anyone expected or predicted. The Niners have tried to trade the veteran, clearing the way for second-year quarterback Trey Lance. However, offseason shoulder surgery halted trade discussions, and the 49ers, for now, appear stuck with Garoppolo and his hefty salary.
The 49ers have maintained that they are comfortable holding onto Garoppolo if they cannot strike a deal to their liking. Everyone realizes, though, that Plan A is to trade the quarterback for something worthwhile rather than letting him fulfill his contract on the team and leave as a free agent in 2023. Releasing Garoppolo would also net them nothing, aside from salary cap space.
Holding onto Garoppolo might happen. Most of
