Trey Lance vs. Jimmy Garoppolo: Kyle Shanahan discusses 49ers' QB situation for Week 18

By David Bonilla

After the San Francisco 49ers' 23-7 victory over the Houston Texans, head coach Kyle Shanahan hinted that fans might see rookie quarterback Trey Lance make his third NFL start. Next weekend will be an all-important Week 18 playoff-implicating matchup against the division-rival Los Angeles Rams. "I'm just glad we took care of business," Shanahan said. "So we've got our second playoff game next week." Shanahan, of course, is referring to the 49ers' must-win matchups in these final two weeks of the regular season, looking at both as playoff games for his squad. The team could not afford to lose either. So who will be the quarterback in that next playoff game on January 9th? After all, Lance did just earn his first career NFL win. "I mean,

'I know he's got my back': 49ers rookie Trey Lance discusses relationship with Jimmy Garoppolo

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance feels like he's learned a lot this season, even after spending most of it on the sideline. He's had a great mentor in veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, the team's starter, and feels well-prepared for whatever the team asks of him. On Sunday, Lance got the opportunity to make his second career NFL start. It was the home finale for the 49ers and his first start and significant action since Week 5. Lance emerged with his first victory and isn't just grateful for the lessons learned from Garoppolo. He's also thankful for the veteran's support through what could have been an awkward situation. "Yeah, I've said a million times, Jimmy is one of the best teammates and leaders I've ever been around," Lance told reporters after the

Sunday against the Texans was Trey Lance's second career start and his performance was nothing short of eye-opening to watch. Lance threw just 23 times, completing 16 passes for 248 yards, and added eight carries on the ground for 31 yards. Additionally, Lance threw for two touchdowns and one interception in the 23-7 defeat of the Houston Texans. As the 49ers Twitter account noted, "it wasn't always pretty." The 49ers struggled to move the ball in the first half as Lance seemed—at times—uncomfortable and overwhelmed by the Texans defensive look. During the first half, as expected, San Francisco relied on the run game against an inferior Texans run defense, and had some success, as Lance and Co. led drives of 30 yards and 56 yards, but

49ers' Kyle Juszczyk breaks down the difference between Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo

The Levi's Stadium crowd was excited to see San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance receive his first career home start. It was even more exciting to see the 21-year-old earn his first win as a starter. The 49ers quarterback situation is fluid heading into the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams. The safer bet would be Lance getting his third NFL start with Jimmy Garoppolo still dealing with a thumb injury. "Trey did a good job," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday's win over the Houston Texans. "If Jimmy can't go [against the Rams], we won't hesitate at all. But if we feel Jimmy can go and play confident, then Jimmy will be
