Some are starting to wonder if Kyle Shanahan is taking on too much as the San Francisco 49ers head coach. In addition to the duties that typically come with that job, Shanahan is also the team's play-caller. He acts as the offensive coordinator despite the team having an offensive coordinator by title — Mike McDaniel.
The current four-game losing streak has forced some to wonder if it's just too much for Shanahan.
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR this afternoon and was asked if the head coach might be better served by offloading some of his duties to others on game days. Would that help in situations where a lot is going on?
"No," Lynch responded on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "I've got to tell you, Larry [Krueger], I've got all the belief in the world in Kyle Shanahan doing all those things."
Krueger pointed out that Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has an analytics expert at his side during games to help him with some of the decision-making.
"And yes, just like John Harbaugh, it's not something revolutionary," Lynch continued. "We've got analytics guys up in the box who help him with those things. On the particular play you're talking about (the odd challenge from Sunday's loss to the Colts), our communication went out at the wrong time. You know, stuff happens. And Kyle owned up to that, and that's what it is.
"But I think our process is good, and I feel very fortunate to have Kyle Shanahan as our coach in everything he does, and I'll leave it at that."
