Alex Mack: ‘It’ll be interesting to see’ how the 49ers use Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance vs. Lions

Sep 6, 2021 at 1:30 PM--

Assuming Trey Lance is available for Week 1, the Detroit Lions have a tough task preparing for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. While Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be the starter, the No. 3 overall pick could see the field. Again, assuming he is healthy.

Lance suffered a chipped bone in his finger on August 29 during the 49ers' preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders. As a result, he has been limited during practices and hasn't been allowed to throw footballs. That was again the case during today's practice. The team's next practice is scheduled for Wednesday, as the real prep work for the Lions kicks off.

Against the Raiders, the 49ers repeatedly swapped between Garoppolo and Lance during the first two drives, causing some confusion for the opposing defense. Garoppolo and Lance each scored rushing touchdowns during those drives—Garoppolo in the first and Lance in the second.

Adding that to the exhibition game plan added to the Lions' prep work this week. Maybe that was the point.

"It'll be interesting to see what happens with that," center Alex Mack told reporters today.

Indeed. Reporters and fans alike are very interested to see how the 49ers use their very different quarterbacks in Week 1. Garoppolo has a solid grasp of head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, but Lance provides a different level of athleticism that drastically changes how a team might defend against the 49es offense.

"That's the whole game, isn't it?" Mack added.

One reporter added that the Lions are probably interested in what Mack and others think about the 49ers' game plan, whatever it might be.

"Exactly. Let's keep it that way," Mack commented.

Detroit is planning for both quarterbacks. Not knowing what to expect, they have no choice but to do so.

"I think you've got to prepare for both," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said today, per Lions Wire. "You have to assume that they may try to mix (Lance) in there and use him a little bit. We'll make sure that we've taken care of some of that."

The 49ers and Lions kick off from Ford Field on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET).

Alex Mack on 49ers' QB situation: 'I want the guy who's going to win games'

The San Francisco 49ers might be approaching a crossroads. Eventually, a quarterback decision will need to be made. Jimmy Garoppolo is the team's undisputed starter right now. However, his injury history made the 49ers uncomfortable to the point that the team drafted Trey Lance this offseason. Lance is the future. He will eventually succeed Garoppolo. When that happens is anybody's guess. Garoppolo sustained a calf injury during Week 4, forcing Lance to start Week 5 — when the rookie suffered a knee sprain. Things are trending toward Garoppolo starting this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. The veteran passer was out on the practice field with his

Alex Mack says fans shouldn't be concerned about 49ers rookie Aaron Banks' lack of playing time

The San Francisco 49ers have played five games this season. Their second-round draft pick, guard Aaron Banks, has been inactive for each of them. That has led many to question the selection. That's a high draft slot for a player who has yet to contribute this season. Veteran center Alex Mack joined KNBR this morning and was asked about his rookie teammate. What does Banks need to do to get on the football field for the 49ers? "Just keep putting the work in," Mack responded on the Murph & Mac show. "You know, he's a good dude. He works hard. He just has a couple of more things to learn and put the work in. And it's a credit to the other guards that it's not easy to break the starting lineup. We have a lot of depth here. "Aaron is

Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance for 49ers-Cardinals? John Lynch responds, provides update on George Kittle

Today's practice will be very telling. Everyone wants to know which quarterback will head onto the field with the offense when the San Francisco 49ers take on the division-leading Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. Will it be Jimmy Garoppolo, or will the team go with the rookie, Trey Lance? Garoppolo sustained a calf injury during Week 4's loss to the Seattle Seahawks and has not practiced this week. The 49ers' final practice will be this afternoon, and Garoppolo told head coach Kyle Shanahan that he wants to "give it a go." "Jimmy is a tough competitor," general manager John Lynch said this morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "And Jimmy was

Joe Staley: Jimmy Garoppolo will start, but 49ers are more exciting with Trey Lance

By Marc Adams

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle, Joe Staley, went on KNBR Radio on Monday to discuss the 49ers' loss to the Arizona Cardinals. As expected, the conversation went to the quarterback situation with Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, including who Staley believed would be under center in two weeks when the 49ers play the Indianapolis Colts. "I think he made his decision before the season even started," Staley said on the Papa & Lund show. "If Jimmy's healthy, he's going to be our quarterback this year. They want to use it as a red-shirt year, almost, for Trey this season. I was encouraged." That seemed to be the plan in the offseason, to have Lance sit and learn. Even after the game on Sunday, Kyle Shanahan continued to hold his ground that
