‘He has a chance to be special’: 49ers CEO Jed York asked Frank Gore to evaluate Trey Lance

May 1, 2021 at 7:38 AM--

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York and Frank Gore remain close. The NFL running back spent his first 10 seasons with the Niners and York values his opinion. So, when San Francisco traded up to the No. 3 overall pick, York reached out to Gore to seek his opinion on Trey Lance of North Dakota State, the quarterback the 49ers would end up drafting on Thursday night.

"Just take a look and let me know what you think," York said, per Jim Trotter NFL Media.

York didn't hear back for weeks. That changed on Tuesday night, the day before general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan said they informed their boss, the man who signs their checks, that they had reached a consensus on Lance.

"CALL ME," read a text from an exuberant Gore.

After a deep-dive into Lance's film, Gore was impressed by the young quarterback.

"You don't give up all that for a pocket passer," Gore told Trotter. "You don't give up all that and still need to call a perfect play for a guy. This guy can make plays even when the call ain't perfect. He has a chance to be special in that offense."

Gore, a five-time Pro Bowler, remains a free agent after spending last season with the New York Jets.

As for Lance, York has confidence that the young quarterback has all the tools to flourish with Shanahan as his teacher.

"There's nobody I'd rather put a rookie, young quarterback in the hands of than Kyle," York said.

Mike McDaniel explains how Trey Lance has impressed the 49ers

Rookie Trey Lance has been getting practice reps since May 14, when the San Francisco 49ers kicked off their rookie minicamp. Organized team activities (OTAs), which included seven more practices, followed. Those were cut short following a couple of serious injuries to two potential key backups this week in Justin Skule and Tarvarius Moore. Now, Lance will have until July 27 to study what he has learned and prepare for training camp. The 49ers surrendered significant draft capital to trade up to select Lance at No. 3 overall. While viewed as raw, having only 17 games on his collegiate resume, his talent is undeniable. Kyle Shanahan fell in love with Lance's

49ers' George Kittle says Jimmy Garoppolo 'has a fire lit under him,' good dynamic with Trey Lance

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle was a guest today on Good Morning Football and discussed several topics of interest. Among those topics was the dynamic between the team's starting quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, and the rookie drafted at No. 3 overall to eventually succeed him, Trey Lance. One would think that could create an awkward situation in the quarterback room and possibly the locker room. That hasn't been the case for the 49ers, though. Garoppolo has been welcoming to the young quarterback and willing to serve as his mentor while preparing for the 2021 season. "I know there was a story that came out that Jimmy Garoppolo was one of the first guys to text Trey Lance," Kittle said. "That's just the type of guy that Jimmy is. He's not going

Mohamed Sanu has some laughs at 49ers rookie Trey Lance's expense

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance is spending the next month preparing for training camp. He threw some passes to teammate Mohamed Sanu this week, and the veteran wideout had a little fun at the rookie's expense. Many NFL players use the cars they drive to make a statement. The bigger the contract, the flashier the car might be. Lance's statement appears to be, "Cut me some slack. I haven't even signed my rookie deal yet." Sanu jokingly poked fun of Lance's ride this week — a Chevrolet Malibu. It's probably not the statement vehicle you would expect of a young up-and-coming star. "All that money, he pull up in a Malibu," Sanu can
