Justin Fields of Ohio State spent about a week as the betting favorite to be the No. 3 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, surpassing Mac Jones of Alabama. Jones regained the lead and has held onto it for the past five days. During all of that, Trey Lance of North Dakota State had been in the No. 3 spot.

On Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network dropped a bombshell. It was news that had already been rumored, but the story means more when the longtime NFL insider reports it. Rapoport stated that the decision in the 49ers clubhouse has come down to two candidates — Jones and Lance.

If accurate, it sounds like Fields may be out.

The news has created a shift among betting odds. Jones remains the favorite. He is now following by Lance. Fields comes in a more distant third place.

Below are the betting odds from MyBookie, as of this morning:

  • Mac Jones -170

Analyst Dane Brugler recently revealed his seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, forecasting all 257 selections in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, set to kick off next week. "Piecing together a mock like this is time consuming, but I enjoy the exercise, because it allows me to focus on each team's needs, organizational trends and prospect-team pairings that make sense based on '30' visits, league buzz and overall interest," Brugler wrote. Most expect the 49ers to address the trenches early in the draft, and Brugler has the team doing that. It's just not on the offensive side of the football.
