David Bakhtiari jokingly calls Trent Williams ‘petty’ after record-breaking deal with 49ers

Trent Williams is officially the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL, and the former tackle to hold that title, David Bakhtiari of the Green Bay Packers, had something to say about that on Wednesday morning.

Bakhtiari's comments were because Williams' average salary per season only slightly edges the Packers tackle by a small amount. Williams will earn an average of $23.01 million over the life of his massive six-year, $138.06 million deal. Bakhtiari earns an average of $23 million.

The signing of Williams locks in Pro Football Focus' highest-graded tackle from last season with San Francisco for the foreseeable future. The 49ers traded for Williams during last year's draft, and he provided stability to the left side of the offensive line after fan-favorite Joe Staley retired.

ESPN's Dianna Russini first reported news of the record-breaking deal in the middle of the night.

Williams is now the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. The $138.06 million deal is the largest overall amount for an offensive lineman by a significant margin, surpassing the $98.75 million deal earned by Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley last year (h/t to Kirk Larrabee on that nugget).

By David Bonilla

As expected, the most significant storyline surrounding the San Francisco 49ers this offseason revolves around the contract negotiations with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
