The poaching of the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff continues. It was reported today that the New York Jets are hiring defensive backs coach Tony Oden to join head coach Robert Saleh's staff. Now, NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport reports that Saleh is also adding 49ers passing game specialist Mike Rutenberg to serve as his linebackers coach.
The #Jets and coach Robert Saleh have hired Mike Rutenberg as LBs coach, source said. Rutenberg spent last season as the passing game specialist with the #49ers and the seven seasons before that with Jacksonville in multiple defensive roles.
Rutenberg joined the 49ers in June of 2020 after serving in various coaching roles with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he and Saleh first worked together from 2014-16. Rutenberg started his coaching career in 2003 as an assistant to former Washington coach Joe Gibbs.
