Middlekauff suggests 49ers trade 1st-round pick for Matthew Stafford

Jan 22, 2021 at 2:46 PM--

It seems like everyone is trying to find a way to replace Jimmy Garoppolo. While the San Francisco 49ers quarterback has proven to be a difference-maker on the football field with a regular-season record of 24-8 as a starter, he has missed most of the past three seasons due to injuries.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the possibility of acquiring Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. A lot. Of course, it's all just traffic-generating chatter at this point as Watson has not requested a trade, and the Texans have not said they would be willing to ship off their star player.

Popular podcast host John Middlekauff, a former NFL scout, joined KNBR this week and suggested another quarterback for the 49ers to target in a trade, should the team move on from Garoppolo. Middlekauff believes that Garoppolo's 2019 season was the outlier and that San Francisco should move on from the oft-injured quarterback.

"If Jimmy Garoppolo had played 16 games and just been average, how do they not win probably eight or nine games, and they're in the playoffs, right?" Middlekauff said on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show (h/t to KNBR). "… I just can't roll back with Jimmy. Now, what are my options?

"I would trade pick 12 for Matt Stafford. Now, it's easy to say that, but their coach, he's talking about chewing people's knees off, so we'll see when him and Matt eventually get on the phone together."

Stafford has started 16 games in each season since 2011, with the exception of 2019, when he landed on injured reserve.

"But I think it's fair to say that, at this point in time, it's just time for a change there (for the 49ers)," Middlekauff continued. "It'd be an easy one. Getting pick 12 for Matt Stafford would be a pretty good deal, and then you could trade Jimmy and basically just transfer the money to Matt Stafford, a guy that, until the end of last season, has been very, very durable his entire career."

Middlekauff identified New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold as a potential backup option, should the 49ers fail to acquire Stafford. It sounds like the former scout is ready to see San Francisco move on from Garoppolo.

"The thing with Jimmy, you can't really get rid of Jimmy if your plan is to draft a quarterback because you're drafting at pick 12," Middlekauff added. "There's so much stuff out of your control, and if you plan on trading up, he would probably be on the team for the draft. My goal would be to get Matt Stafford."

49ers projected to land two offensive stars in Draft Network seven-round mock

By Kirk Larrabee
Feb 20, 2021

Mock drafts are a dime a dozen this time of year, and most of them wind up projecting something unexciting that has already been projected several times before. But every once in a while, a mock draft comes along that is interesting enough to single out and discuss on its own, like this one from Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network. Fowler put together a complete seven-round mock for the 49ers using The Draft Network's endlessly entertaining Mock Draft Machine and came up with an intriguing list of players that includes two of college football's biggest offensive stars over the past two seasons. The first is quarterback Justin Fields of Ohio State, whom Fowler has going to the 49ers in Round 1. The second

Peter King weighs in on what it might cost for 49ers to trade for Deshaun Watson

By Kirk Larrabee
Feb 22, 2021

Would the 49ers be willing to trade one of their top two young defensive stars, a slew of draft picks, and more if it meant getting Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson in return? It's possible that's the type of package they might have to ship in Houston's direction if they ever have the chance. And it's one that NBC Sports NFL writer Peter King proposes in his latest Football Morning In America column, in which he comes up with his own deals for teams that could be interested in bringing the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback into the fold. King starts this discussion with an important disclaimer, which is the Texans have yet to give any sign whatsoever that they are actually interested in trading Watson, even though Watson (4,823 passing yards, 33

Simms can't envision a 49ers trade scenario involving Nick Bosa

By David Bonilla
Feb 22, 2021

Chris Simms conducted an ask-me-anything version of his podcast, Chris Simms Unbuttoned, and spent a good deal of time discussing quarterback Deshaun Watson and his situation with the Houston Texans. Watson wants out, but the Texans want to repair the estranged relationship. There would be high demand if Watson were actually able to force a trade. His no-trade clause means that he would have a lot of say in any potential destination. It's not a stretch to believe that San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan might be intrigued by the possibility of adding a talent like Watson to his offense. Of course, there is no urgency on the part of the 49ers, as they have made it clear they are pleased to move forward with Jimmy Garoppolo. San Francisco has

Peter King explains his thinking behind wild 3-team trade proposal involving 49ers

Whenever Kirk Cousins' name comes up in trade rumors, San Francisco 49ers fans seem to let out a collective groan. That's the reaction caused by Peter King's latest column where he speculates what it might take for a team to acquire quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. More on the Cousins portion in a minute. Kirk Larrabee covered what King feels the 49ers might need to surrender to acquire Watson, and it is a hefty price. The NFL writer has San Francisco shipping quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, linebacker Fred Warner, tackle Mike McGlinchey, this year's first-round pick, 2022's first-round pick, this year's second-round pick, and a third-round pick in
