The San Francisco 49ers fanbase is decidedly split on the prospect of mortgaging an insurmountable amount of draft capital for the prospect of adding Houston Texans quarterback
Deshaun Watson. Pro Football Focus laid out a
hypothetical but realistic trade scenario for the quarterback that involved San Francisco shipping off its first-round picks in each of the next three drafts, this year's second-round pick, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
As of this post, the results of our poll on the subject are nearly evenly split, with half willing to do that and the other half unwilling to give up that much.
Everyone is voicing his or her opinion on the situation in Houston and taking advantage of the hot topic. That includes Nick Wright of FS1, who feels a pairing between Watson and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would be dangerous for opposing offenses (h/t to
Patrick Tulini for the find)
"The one [trade] that should terrify the NFL — San Francisco," Wright said on
First Things First. "Deshaun Watson in Kyle Shanahan's offense ... to me, that's 14-2. You get (George) Kittle back, you get the defensive players back, Deshaun Watson in that offense, to me, that would be worth whatever San Francisco would have to pay for it."
Wright also adds that the New York Jets and Washington would make ideal trade partners, should things degrade enough in Houston for the Texans to consider moving on from one of the game's most exciting players.

Should the 49ers be worried about Christian McCaffrey's workload?
It's not an exaggeration to say that RB Christian McCaffrey is coming off one of the best individual seasons in the history of the San Francisco 49ers.
In his first full year in red and gold, McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459), total yards (2,023) and total touchdowns (21) on his way to becoming Offensive Player of the Year. His yards on the ground were the fourth most ever for a Niners running back and his 21 touchdowns trailed only WR Jerry Rice's team record of 23, which the Hall of Famer accomplished in just 12 games in 1987. McCaffrey was also prolific in the passing game, hauling in 67 receptions and often providing a safety net for QB Brock Purdy.
Because McCaffrey has meant so much to Kyle Shanahan's scheme, it's easy to see why the offense
Brock Purdy hopes Kyle Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score.
Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries.
On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,
PFF mock draft has 49ers adding cornerback with 'unique fluidity and size'
Analyst Steve Palazzolo unveiled a first-round mock draft for Pro Football Focus, attempting to forecast the selections for each NFL team within the top 32 picks. While the San Francisco 49ers concentrated on strengthening the defensive line in free agency, Palazzolo envisions the team continuing to fortify that side of the ball.
In his mock draft, Palazzolo predicts that the 49ers will select former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick.
"Tampa's unique fluidity and size for a cornerback make him worthy of a top-75 pick," reads the analysis from Pro Football Focus' big board. "If he can clean up his footwork, he can
Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk
It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago.
Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023
