The compensation involved in the trade that sent linebacker Kwon Alexander from the San Francisco 49ers to the New Orleans Saints was going to either be a 2021 fifth-round pick or a 2022 fifth-round pick. Which one depended on the linebacker's playing time.

Alexander reportedly sustained a torn Achilles in the Saints' Christmas Day victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The linebacker was a favorite among his former 49ers teammates, and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers are likely to receive a 2021 fifth-round pick after Alexander reportedly met the playing-time benchmark required.

Entering Week 16, San Francisco owns the following eight draft picks before compensatory picks are factored in. The team traded away its third-rounder as part of the deal for tackle Trent Williams, and the additional seventh-rounder was part of the trade for defensive end Jordan Willis.

  • 1st round, No. 12 overall
  • 2nd round, No. 43 overall
  • 4th round, No. 105 overall
  • 5th round, No. 136 overall
  • 5th round, No. 157 overall (from NO)
  • 6th round, No. 173 overall
  • 7th round, No. 194 overall (from NYJ)
  • 7th round, No. 204 overall

The 49ers could also land a third-round pick should defensive coordinator Robert Saleh be hired as a head coach.

By David Bonilla

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Dre Greenlaw will receive the Dwight Clark Award this year. The San Francisco 49ers linebacker will take the stage on Thursday, May 16, at the fourth annual Dwight Clark Legacy Series in San Jose to accept the prestigious award. Each year, a current 49ers player is honored with the Dwight Clark Legacy Award, presented to a player who best exemplifies the late receiver's spirit of teamwork. Linebacker Fred Warner was the recipient last year. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead, now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, was the recipient in 2022, while tight end George Kittle earned the first-ever award in 2021. "Dre is more than deserving of the 2024 Dwight Clark Award," Warner said of his teammate, per Maiocco. "The

7-round mock draft: 49ers trade up to fortify secondary

The San Francisco 49ers first selection in next week's draft comes at No. 31 overall. However, NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter doesn't have the Bay Area team remaining at that spot in the first round. In his seven-round mock draft, he envisions the 49ers striking a deal with the Green Bay Packers to move up six spots to No. 25 overall, where they select former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. Reuter notes, "Whether it's for a cornerback like McKinstry, an offensive lineman or a receiver, the 49ers could very well give up a mid-round pick to acquire one of the few missing pieces on an otherwise potent roster." The rest of the mock draft reveals at least part of the

7-round mock draft from The Athletic sees 49ers fortifying defense early

By David Bonilla

Analyst Dane Brugler recently revealed his seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, forecasting all 257 selections in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, set to kick off next week. "Piecing together a mock like this is time consuming, but I enjoy the exercise, because it allows me to focus on each team's needs, organizational trends and prospect-team pairings that make sense based on '30' visits, league buzz and overall interest," Brugler wrote. Most expect the 49ers to address the trenches early in the draft, and Brugler has the team doing that. It's just not on the offensive side of the football. In fact, Brugler doesn't have San Francisco

49ers address both sides of the ball in latest Kiper 2-round mock draft

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers have overhauled their defensive line in free agency, bidding farewell to defensive tackle Arik Armstead and defensive end Chase Young while bolstering their ranks with the signings of defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos. Additionally, they acquired defensive tackle Maliek Collins via trade. Having focused primarily on the defensive side of the ball in free agency, the 49ers are widely anticipated to turn their attention to the offensive side in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Long-standing ESPN analyst Mel Kiper unveiled his latest mock draft, this
