San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman made headlines this weekend by saying that his return to the red and gold in 2021 isn't looking very likely. The three-time first-team All-Pro knows the 49ers' salary-cap situation and is well aware that there are several players the team needs to consider locking up after the season.
"I've enjoyed my time," Sherman told NBC Sports Bay Area. "I've loved every moment of it. And I wish we could continue it for a couple more years, but it's not looking likely."
Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice, who still follows his old club religiously, joined 95.7 The Game and was asked about Sherman's comments and what it means for his future with the 49ers.
"Richard Sherman is really going to have to decide," Rice said on The Morning Roast. "I think he still has a lot of football in him, if it's going to be with the Niners or if it's going to be with another team."
Does Rice feel Sherman's comments could become a distraction for the 49ers, who remain in the hunt for a playoff spot and look to earn a big win tonight against the Buffalo Bills?
"That could be a motivating factor for him because he got an interception last week, and I think he's a big factor in that secondary," Rice responded. "And I think, with his experience, he brings a lot of knowledge, and he helps those younger guys to get in position to where they can make plays.
"So, this could be a rallying call. I don't think it's a distraction or anything like that, but it's Monday Night Football, and it's time to go right now, guys."
San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York made headlines earlier this month when he called Brock Purdy a top-10 NFL quarterback. The timing raised eyebrows, as the team is currently engaged in contract negotiations with Purdy. Some speculated that York's comments could bolster the...
