Mike Sando of The Athletic recently spoke to his NFL contacts, and the belief seems to be that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's time with the San Francisco 49ers is coming to an end.
Garoppolo owns a 24-8 record as a starter. The only problem is that he can't stay on the field. Garoppolo has missed 16 games over the past three seasons — a full season's worth.
Those subscribing to the belief that availability is the best ability will question Garoppolo's value, especially considering how much salary-cap space he consumes. The quarterback is scheduled to take up $27 million of cap space in each of the next two seasons. That's in addition to the $26.6 million he is taking up this year.
Sando points out that Garoppolo is just 1-of-11 on pass attempts targeting 20-or-more yards downfield. As fans' love for the quarterback diminishes, so does the belief in NFL circles that San Francisco will stick with Tom Brady's former protégé.
"Multiple execs think the 49ers will strongly consider alternatives (this offseason)," wrote Sando.
That could mean an offseason trade. It could mean a draft selection. It could also mean both.
"I think [Garoppolo] may be done in San Francisco," one exec told Sando. "And if they keep him, it's only because they don't have another option."
