The San Francisco 49ers made a quarterback change in the second half of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, replacing injured starter Jimmy Garoppolo with backup Nick Mullens after halftime.
Garoppolo took a hit to the ankle early in the first quarter of Sunday's game and hobbled throughout the remainder of the first half before staying in the locker room for the start of the second half. Garoppolo was on point during the first half despite the injury, finishing 14 of 16 for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Mullens threw his first passes for the 49ers since 2018. During that season, Mullens threw for 2,277 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while Garoppolo was sidelined with a torn ACL. The team's third-string quarterback, C.J. Beathard, was left inactive for Sunday's game.
The 49ers also ruled out running back Raheem Mostert at halftime due to a knee injury. It wasn't made clear at the time when the injury took place. The team also lost defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas due to knee injuries earlier in the game.
