Raheem Mostert out, Nick Mullens in at QB for 49ers after Jimmy Garoppolo injury

Sep 20, 2020 at 11:42 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers made a quarterback change in the second half of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, replacing injured starter Jimmy Garoppolo with backup Nick Mullens after halftime.

Garoppolo took a hit to the ankle early in the first quarter of Sunday's game and hobbled throughout the remainder of the first half before staying in the locker room for the start of the second half. Garoppolo was on point during the first half despite the injury, finishing 14 of 16 for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Mullens threw his first passes for the 49ers since 2018. During that season, Mullens threw for 2,277 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while Garoppolo was sidelined with a torn ACL. The team's third-string quarterback, C.J. Beathard, was left inactive for Sunday's game.

The 49ers also ruled out running back Raheem Mostert at halftime due to a knee injury. It wasn't made clear at the time when the injury took place. The team also lost defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas due to knee injuries earlier in the game.

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 5 contest against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. "We weren't concerned at all, just because it was just sore," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday of Ward's injury. "That's why we didn't talk about it. But today, it was sorer, and the fact that it was getting a little worse and not better, we just wanted to do some tests on it. I'm pretty optimistic about it. We're doing this more for precautionary reasons right now." The good news is that Jimmy Garoppolo appears to be making progress in his

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is working his way back from an ankle injury. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, he will practice with his teammates this afternoon but be limited. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that Garoppolo will play on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. "The fact that he's coming out today and getting a little more reps, it has (made me more optimistic)," Shanahan said. "I haven't seen him yet. I mean, he did a good job in walk-through, and we'll see how he goes. We're going to throw him in there today, and that will give me more of an opinion, at least." Garoppolo has missed the last two games after sustaining his injury during Week 2 against the New York Jets. Shanahan informed

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and running back Raheem Mostert joined their teammates on the practice field for the second consecutive day. Because reporters can only watch the first few minutes of practices during the season, it is impossible to know how much of a workload they are taking on. #49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) and RB Raheem Mostert (knee) participating in practice again during early portion open to practice Thursday. pic.twitter.com/g3KtNJ3JaU— Nick Wagoner
