PFF predicts Seahawks, not 49ers, will win NFC West

Aug 13, 2020 at 6:18 AM--

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus made his predictions for the 2020 NFL season. Among those predictions are the division winners across the league. Who does the analyst envision emerging as division champions from the NFC West?

Not the San Francisco 49ers.

Monson has the Seattle Seahawks reclaiming the throne in his take on how the upcoming season will pan out.

"When in doubt, err on the side of the best quarterback," wrote Monson, "and right now Russell Wilson is the best quarterback in the NFL not named Patrick Mahomes. The 49ers will need to battle against the inevitable Super Bowl hangover, and though Seattle has some issues, they have added some immediate impact pieces at key spots (Jamal Adams, Quinton Dunbar)."

Monson does have San Francisco earning a playoff spot as a Wildcard. However, he has them falling short in their "Revenge Tour" as the analyst envisions the Baltimore Ravens winning Super Bowl LV.

"I'm predicting the 49ers to get beaten out by the Seahawks for the division," Monson adds, "but they're still going to be good. Kyle Shanahan is too good of a coach for this team to disappear over one disappointment."

Monson notes that many of his picks are simply "playing the odds," and acknowledges that things in the NFL don't always pan out as predicted.

"There are surprises and shocks every year that would have been impossible to predict without the use of a crystal ball, so I have taken my best guess in certain spots at forecasting some of those surprises," wrote Monson.

PFF predicts Dre Greenlaw to be 49ers' 2020 breakout player

By David Bonilla
Sep 9, 2020

Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus went around the league and predicted one potential breakout player for each team during the 2020 season. For the San Francisco 49ers, he picked second-year linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Treash wrote the following of the selection: "Greenlaw surprised as a fifth-round rookie last year with how well he performed in Kwon Alexander's absence. He shined in coverage, posting a 72.6 grade in that facet throughout the 49ers' regular-season and postseason run (15th-best at the position). Greenlaw limits yards after the catch and has a clear nose for the ball. Including the postseason, he racked up 22 passing stops, which were the third-most at the position. He's already a top-25 linebacker in the NFL and is capable of

Simms predicts 49ers to earn the No. 1 seed but lose to Seahawks in the playoffs

By David Bonilla

Chris Simms has at least some faith in the San Francisco 49ers. The NBC Sports analyst predicts his buddy Kyle Shanahan's squad not only to win the NFC West but earn the top seed in the NFC playoffs. In fact, he has three teams from the division — the Niners, Seattle Seahawks, and Los Angeles Rams — all making it into the postseason. As for the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers' Week 1 opponent, Simms noted on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast, "I think they're going to be a pain in the a--." Simms continues: "I'm expecting the 49ers. Of course, I am." Co-host Ahmed Fareed asks the analyst to clarify if that means he anticipates San Francisco to win the NFC West. "Yes," Simms responded. "And to be the No. 1 seed. There
