Former 49ers tackle Joe Staley shows off his weight loss since retirement

Aug 8, 2020 at 10:51 AM--

Joe Staley revealed to ESPN last month that he had lost 50 pounds since retiring. The former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman recently shared the following photo of his new self on Instagram (h/t to Grant Cohn for the find).

Staley told ESPN's Emily Kaplan that he had already gone from a size-40 waste to a size-36, and that was a month ago.

"As an offensive lineman, you're always known as this big, humongous, unathletic blob," Staley told Kaplan. "Offensive linemen get casted in a movie, and they're always 500 pounds. Then you get the opportunity to be healthy again, and all of the effort you used to put into football, you put into that. It gives you a focus once you retire. It's a little bit vain, but I'm starting to see abs that I've always wanted. And it's kind of exciting."

Staley has accomplished his weight loss simply by eating healthier. After all, he's not expecting to block massive defensive linemen anymore.

"In the NFL, I always ate when I was hungry and whatever was available," Staley said. "If it was salmon, great. If it was frozen pizza, I'd eat that too."

Staley announced his retirement from the NFL on April 25.

49ers TE Jordan Reed steps up with his biggest performance since 2018 in George Kittle's absence

By Kirk Larrabee

With All-Pro tight end George Kittle sidelined with a knee issue and a number of wide receivers dealing with injuries of their own, the 49ers needed someone to step up and carry the weight in the pass-catching department against the New York Jets on Sunday. Needless to say, veteran tight end Jordan Reed answered the call in a big way. Given his extensive injury history, it was hard to know what to expect from Reed after he signed with the 49ers in August. Reed missed the entire 2019 season after sustaining the seventh known concussion of his career and was limited to 65 total games over his first seven NFL seasons. But after being brought along slowly during training camp, Reed began to show signs of still being the type of player he was earlier in his career

Frank Gore's former 49ers coach once praised the running back in a hilarious way

The San Francisco 49ers could see a healthy dose of Frank Gore on Sunday when they travel to MetLife Stadium to play the New York Jets. The running back remains the 49ers' all-time rushing leader. He started his career with the team, played 10 seasons with San Francisco, and remains a fan favorite. Gore even has admirers on the current 49ers roster. Running back Raheem Mostert once asked former Niners tackle Joe Staley about Gore. Staley and Gore played eight seasons together. "I asked him, 'What does it take for a guy like me to be like Frank Gore?'" Mostert shared this past offseason. "Because Frank Gore is my idol. I love watching him play, and I know that Joe was blocking

49ers: Can Jimmy Garoppolo Continue His Success Against Arizona?

By Allan McBride
Sep 10, 2020

In 2019, the San Francisco 49ers beat their divisional rival, the Arizona Cardinals, twice during the regular season by a combined 13 points, as both games went down to the wire. The Cardinals offense was able to move the ball against the 49ers top ranked defensive unit. The Cardinals averaged 311.5 total yards of offense, and 133 rushing yards per game, both well above what the 49ers defense allowed on average. Defensively, the Cardinals shut down the 49ers rushing attack, allowing only 135 total rushing yards in the two match ups. It was evident that the Cardinals' game plan was to take away the 49ers' strengths, and force them to throw the ball. Their strategy was effective, but the 49ers were up to the task, as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo led his team to two crucial
