Brandon Aiyuk at No. 6 on PFF’s fantasy football ranking for rookie receivers

Jul 14, 2020 at 8:19 AM--

While the 2020 rookie wide receiver class was seen as one of the best in recent memory, Pro Football Focus warns fans and analysts alike to temper expectations when it comes to projecting statistics from the rookie wideouts.

The analytics site ranked rookies position-by-position based on their projected roles and fantasy football production. The San Francisco 49ers' first-round pick, Brandon Aiyuk, came in at No. 6 for rookie receivers.

Ian Hartitz wrote the following about Aiyuk:

"He doesn't possess overwhelming size (6-foot and 205 pounds) or speed (4.5-second 40-yard dash), but his average of 17 yards per catch at Arizona State reflects the reality that it's a problem to get him to the ground. Kyle Shanahan called Aiyuk his favorite wideout in the draft, meaning a rather prominent Day 1 role isn't impossible. At a minimum, Aiyuk possesses the type of after-the-catch ability to fit neatly inside this offense and see a handful of designed opportunities per game. He should be a favorite to start the season in two-WR sets with Deebo Samuel (foot) potentially starting the season on the PUP list."

Hartitz did briefly mention the two other 49ers rookies who play skill positions but failed to make the rankings for their respective position groups.

"Jauan Jennings deserves a longer look than most seventh-round prospects considering Kyle Shanahan's history of enabling low-drafted players."

And then at tight end...

"Charlie Woerner is tentatively slated to work as more of a special-teams contributor."

By the end of the 2020 season, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk looked a lot more comfortable in the San Francisco 49ers offense and appeared ready to leap to becoming a dangerous offensive weapon. From Week 7 through Week 15, Aiyuk averaged 94.7 receiving yards per game through six appearances. To put that into perspective, maintaining that average throughout a 16-game season would clock in at 1,514 receiving yards. Aiyuk has just scratched the surface. That has 49ers general manager John Lynch excited. The young receiver would have benefited more from a normal offseason leading into his rookie year. That didn't happen, and it may have contributed to a slower start. "Brandon Aiyuk, he's everything we thought he would be, and a little bit more,"

PFF examines what it might cost the 49ers to trade for Deshaun Watson

By David Bonilla
Jan 8, 2021

We'll probably be hearing a lot of speculation surrounding potential trades for quarterback Deshaun Watson until his situation with the Houston Texans gets resolved — if it gets resolved. While most believe that a trade is unlikely to happen, Ian Rapoport's report that Watson is "extremely unhappy" with the Texans brass can't be ignored. Could Watson be so unhappy that he would welcome a divorce from the team that made him the No. 12 overall pick in the 2017 draft? Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk was the first to spark the social-media buzz, reporting that NFL whispers were pointing to Watson being so upset that he might potentially request a trade.
