Kyle Brandt: 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s best football is ahead of him

No one from the Good Morning Football crew envisions the San Francisco 49ers having a Super Bowl hangover. The NFL Network hosts—Kay Adams, Nate Burleson, Peter Schrager, and Kyle Brandt—went through the reasons why on Friday morning.

While Schrager noted San Francisco's ability to avoid complacency following a trip to the Super Bowl LIV, and seemingly replacing any offseason losses with fresh faces, Burleson focused on the team's running game, which utilizes a running back by committee strategy to wear down opposing defenses.

Brandt was surprised by the omission of one name—quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo—as a reason why the 49ers will not suffer a letdown in 2020. The GMF host notes that Garoppolo is just 28 years old, and has only been through one full season as a starting NFL quarterback. Before last year, he had only started 10 games.

"There's a dynamic here where it's all (head coach Kyle) Shanahan; he's the quarterback here," Brandt said. "And it kind of felt the same way when Matt Ryan won the MVP of the NFL and everyone said, 'Well, Kyle Shanahan really won it.'"

Brandt is well-aware that Garoppolo missed one of the biggest throws and opportunities of his career when he missed a wide-open Emmanuel Sanders against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Hitting the veteran receiver likely would have sealed the win for the 49ers.

"It was not a great Super Bowl but it was very, very good season for a guy whose best football is still way ahead of him," Brandt added.

Shanahan in February suffered through his second Super Bowl collapse, with the first as the offensive coordinator in Atlanta.

"Kyle Shanahan never got a chance to avenge 28-3 (Falcons vs. Patriots in Super Bowl LI)," Brandt said. "That was on his watch, and then he leaves to go to San Francisco, takes the head-coaching job.

"For Shanahan this year, it's avenging 20-10, which was his lead in the Super Bowl (LIV). He can do something about it, and I think he's going to do it with a quarterback whose best football has yet to be played in a very, very young 28-year-old Jimmy Garoppolo."

Brock Purdy hopes to organize throwing session ahead of 49ers training camp

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

The San Francisco 49ers will hold a mandatory minicamp from June 4 through 6, officially concluding the team's offseason program. After that, the Niners will break for over a month and return to the Santa Clara facilities for training camp in late July. Between that time, starting quarterbacks will often organize throwing sessions with their receivers in an effort to build chemistry ahead of the rigors of training camp. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been unable to participate in such sessions over the last two years. The last overall draft pick in 2022, Purdy had yet to make a name for himself during his first offseason. Last year, he was still recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing arm. RELATED:

The San Francisco 49ers have been striving to solidify their defensive backfield for years. They would love to find someone to fortify the outside cornerback spot opposite Charvarius Ward, allowing Deommodore Lenoir to play in the slot. While the team holds high hopes for newly signed cornerback Isaac Yiadom, believing he is the frontrunner for the job, the ultimate solution might come in the draft later this month. In a segment for NFL Network's "Path to the Draft," analyst Daniel Jeremiah was asked for the best team fit for former Alabama cornerback

Brock Purdy hopes Kyle Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,
