The San Francisco 49ers have spoken with former North Texas quarterback Mason Fine, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. His height has likely dropped his draft stock. Those who have evaluated the quarterback, according to the report, have been impressed, though.

Fine had been seen working out this offseason with Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints before the shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

"The 49ers have been in contact with Fine," Pelissero said. "He is one of many quarterbacks who are probably not going to get drafted here. Maybe he could slip into the seventh round. All those guys are going to have a tougher path to make an NFL roster this year, just because, without rookie minicamp, OTAs, mandatory minicamp, maybe even portions of training camp, they're just not going to get the reps and the opportunities to learn an offense and show coaches what they can do."

The 49ers reportedly spoke with Fine at the East-West Shrine Game in January. It is unknown if Pelissero's report means the team has spoken with the quarterback after that. San Francisco also met with FIU quarterback James Morgan at the same all-star game.

Fine completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 12,505 yards with 93 touchdowns and 34 interceptions during his four seasons with the Mean Green. He didn't get invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and then saw his pro day, like most others, canceled due to the pandemic.

"I was really looking forward to Pro Day, [especially] as someone who didn't get invited to the combine," Fine said via 247Sports. "I was preparing and feeling great going into the week before, putting up peak numbers, and I was ready to showcase my skills. Not having that opportunity was disappointing and frustrating because you put in three months of work for one day, but there's not much you can do besides get back to work."

Fine goes on to say that he's confident that his game film will help his case as he hopes to land on an NFL roster.

"At the end of the day, that's what coaches look at, and I've gotten great feedback," Fine added.
