Quarterback C.J. Beathard appeared on the San Francisco 49ers' injury estimation on Monday. It was an estimation because the team did not hold a practice on Monday. Beathard is dealing with a right wrist injury. The 49ers' first practice this week is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. PT.
Beathard would not have participated had the 49ers practiced on Monday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that he will not practice on Tuesday and will likely be a game-day decision.
"It's going to be a test for Thursday, and we probably won't know until then," Shanahan said.
The wrist injury is causing Beathard to struggle to hold a football. Shanahan feels he would be ready to play had the 49ers been preparing for a Sunday game, but the team plays on Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders. The coaching staff will have a better idea on Wednesday if Beathard will be able to play.
"My wrist and thumb is kind of messed up," Beathard said on Tuesday. "It's two days after the game, so, hopefully, tomorrow, it will feel a lot better."
X-rays revealed that nothing in his hand was broken.
Beathard said he is hopeful he can play against the Raiders. Shanahan told reporters that Nick Mullens will start on Thursday with Tom Savage as the backup should Beathard be unable to go.
"Nick's a very smart guy who works at it non-stop," Shanahan said. "He'll be able to go in there and execute the offense and (he) knows what he's doing."
