The San Francisco 49ers announced the promotion of tight end Ross Dwelley from the practice squad to the active roster. The 49ers waived defensive lineman Ryan Delaire in a corresponding transaction.
Dwelley will wear number 82.
The transaction is noteworthy because tight end George Kittle was listed on Saturday's injury report as questionable for Monday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. He is dealing with a knee injury and was limited during practices throughout the week.
The other tight ends on the active roster are Garrett Celek and Cole Wick. The roster move may also indicate that one of those two might be inactive.
The move could also be good news regarding Matt Breida's status for the game against the Packers with San Francisco opting to promote a tight end from the practice squad and not running back Jeff Wilson or Matt Dayes.
The 49ers Communications department provided the following breakdown of Dwelley and Delaire via a press release.
A 23-year-old native of El Dorado Hills, CA, Dwelley (6-5, 240) originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent on April 30, 2018, from the University of San Diego. He appeared in 47 games (44 starts) and totaled 197 receptions for 2,305 yards and 26 touchdowns during his five years with the Toreros. As a senior in 2018, he earned First-Team All-Pioneer Football League honors after he saw action in all 12 games (10 starts) and registered 50 receptions for 663 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was released by San Francisco on September 1, 2018, and signed to the team's practice squad the following day.
Delaire (6-4, 260) was promoted to the active roster on October 6, 2018, from the team's practice squad and appeared in last week's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
