Drake Jackson's usage might vary week to week; Young 49ers CBs have an opportunity vs. Packers

By David Bonilla

Maybe soon, Drake Jackson will become the complementary bookend to Nick Bosa that the San Francisco 49ers envisioned for Dee Ford. That was the hope when the team used its first selection in this year's draft, a second-round pick, on the defensive end out of USC. DeMeco Ryans is in his second year as the 49ers' defensive coordinator. He is working to ensure young players like Jackson are prepared for the rigors of an NFL season. He also wants to put those players in the best position to succeed. Their success is the 49ers' success, after all. For now, it looks like the 49ers have Samson Ebukam penciled in as the starter opposite Bosa. That role should eventually land with Jackson. "With Drake, he's coming along," Ryans told reporters after Wednesday's practice.

Deebo Samuel made it through one of the toughest offseasons of his NFL career. He waited to see what would come of his contract extension. The San Francisco 49ers star saw several other wide receivers receive big paydays, making the already agonizing wait worse. That is behind him now, though. San Francisco locked Samuel up through the 2025 season, making him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL and the second-highest paid player on the roster. Of course, he'll own the top spot once quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is moved. "It's been a long six, seven months," Samuel told Tom Pelissero and Maurice Jones-Drew on NFL Network after Sunday's practice. "I'm just like, 'Hurry up and get this over with so I can get back out here with the guys.' I was more eager to

The 49ers open the 2022 preseason with a home game at Levi's Stadium against the Green Bay Packers. It marks the sixth time the two clubs have met in the preseason and the first meeting since 2016. The 49ers lead the all-time preseason series 3-2. San Francisco returns multiple key players from last season's team that reached the NFC Championship, including All-Pros WR Deebo Samuel and T Trent Williams, along with Pro Bowlers DL Nick Bosa, FB Kyle Juszczyk, and TE George Kittle. DL Arik Armstead and LB Fred Warner look to lead a defense that added CB Charvarius Ward, DL Kemoko Turay, DL Kerry Hyder Jr., LB Oren Burks, and S George Odum, as the team also brought in WR Ray-Ray McCloud III on offense, among others. Through the 2022 NFL Draft, the Niners brought in DL Drake

Plan for Trey Lance vs. Vikings depends on next week; 49ers QB discusses first-ever slide

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance played two drives during Friday's 28-21 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers. This week, head coach Kyle Shanahan said the plan for Lance was to play in Week 1 and Week 3 of the preseason schedule, skipping the August 20 game against the Minnesota Vikings. For now, that "most likely" remains the plan, Shanahan told reporters after Friday night's game. That could change based on how next week goes, though. The 49ers will hold joint practices with the Vikings at the TCO Performance Center in Eagan, Minnesota. "We'll see how it goes, but I'm a lot more into the Wednesday and Thursday practice than the game on
