There aren't too many surprises on the San Francisco 49ers' Week 4 inactive list as they prepare to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Southern California.

The San Francisco 49ers' Week 4 inactive report seems to be more affected by injuries than anything else, and there are only a couple of names that might raise eyebrows.

The list, as follows:

  • WR Richie James
  • CB Richard Sherman
  • S Jaquiski Tartt
  • OG Joshua Garnett
  • OL Najee Toran
  • DT Jullian Taylor
  • OT Shon Coleman

Sherman (calf) comes as no surprise after suffering his injury last week. He's expected to be out for at least this contest, perhaps extending into Week 5 when the 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. His absence puts a lot of pressure on younger cornerbacks, Ahkello Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore, who should see an uptick in playing time in game-time relief of reserve defensive back Jimmie Ward.

Running back Matt Breida was listed as questionable with a knee injury this week. The Niners listed Breida as a game-time decision for the contest, although he was seen on the field warming up through regular routines Sunday. No. 2 running back Alfred Morris (knee) was also listed as questionable leading up to the game.

The only slight surprise might be seeing James inactive, although both he and the majority of 49ers receivers haven't made much of an impact this season.

The 49ers and Chargers square off at 4:25 p.m. ET from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his
