There were rumors going around that the Philadelphia Eagles might be a team interested in acquiring Smith via a trade. Today's 1 p.m. trade deadline has come and gone and Smith appears to still be on the team. After all, he practiced with the team today and was in the locker room talking with the media following practice.
OT Joe Staley, another name linked to multiple teams, also practiced with the team today. Something that likely would not have occurred had a trade been imminent.
This means that the 49ers were inactive prior to the trade deadline unless you count the signing of a safety with a history of injury to the practice squad. The 49ers squad was set prior to the deadline will be the squad that will finish out the season, barring any internal roster moves or free agent signings.
And if you thought the team might try to offload QB Colin Kaepernick, he too was in the locker room speaking to the media following practice. Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins confirmed today that Kaepernick would be the starting quarterback when the team plays the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
