On Monday, news of a potential trade of the 49ers receiver broke when Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that multiple teams had shown interest in Smith. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk then reported that one interested team was Philadelphia. Although, Florio noted that no deal is imminent. Later that day, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area debunked the rumors stating that, according to a league source, the 49ers were not shopping Smith.
"A league source told CSNBayArea.com the 49ers are neither shopping Smith nor is a trade anticipated," wrote Maiocco.
Smith entered the season as the 49ers' number one receiver but has struggled through seven games. Jeremy Kerley actually leads the team in receiving with 30 receptions for 331 yards and two touchdowns. Smith has 13 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Smith's best game of this season came against the Buffalo Bills during Week 6 when he had three receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. Coincidentally, that was QB Colin Kaepernick's first game as a starting quarterback since November 1, 2015.
Smith was the 49ers' biggest free agent acquisition of the 2015 offseason and was signed to a five-year, $40 million contract with the team.
