At the top of the list are two youngsters. Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz of the Philadelphia Eagles ranks first in Pro Football Focus' grading scale while third-year quarterback Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders ranks second. The top could change following the Monday Night football matchup, but the bottom is unlikely to do so.
Gabbert finished last season as the 27th ranked quarterback in the NFL per Pro Football Focus, earning a 74.9 grade. This year, his grade is 40.4 through four games. Against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Gabbert earned a grade of 68.8.
"San Francisco didn't ask a lot of its signal-caller, content to call endless zone-read plays, to the extent that Gabbert ended the game with 11 rushes (not counting one kneeldown) even though he managed just 28 yards on those carries," wrote Jordan Plocher of Pro Football Focus. "Given his passing wasn't anything to write home about, and that the deep ball was non-existent (he was 0-for-2 with an interception on pass attempts of 20-plus yards), you have to wonder if the 49ers would be better off with a faster option at quarterback to take better advantage of the read-option."
How does the bottom of the list compare to the top? Let's take a look.
| Rank | Player | Comp | Att | Pct | Yds | Avg | TD | Int | Rate | Grade |
| 1 | C. Wentz | 66 | 102 | 64.7 | 769 | 7.5 | 5 | 0 | 103.8 | 90.5 |
| 2 | D. Carr | 104 | 153 | 68.0 | 1,066 | 7.0 | 9 | 1 | 103.6 | 88.4 |
| 33 | B. Gabbert | 69 | 119 | 58.0 | 728 | 6.1 | 4 | 4 | 73.1 | 40.4 |
| 34 | M. Mariota | 80 | 136 | 58.8 | 925 | 6.8 | 4 | 5 | 73.9 | 37.3 |
Gabbert will remain the starter when the 49ers face the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night at Levi's Stadium.
