"You almost have to go with the guy who's been there," said Theismann. "And that's Blaine Gabbert. He's played a lot of football. (Colin Kaepernick), he's been hurt a little bit, hasn't had a chance to really get as much work with the offense as Blaine has. And when you're dealing with a new offense, a new system, a new coach to impress, the easiest way and the best way to do it is to be on the field to show him.
"You look at the success that Nick Foles had in that system. Sam Bradford couldn't stay healthy, but when he did he put up some pretty good numbers. I mean, they love to throw the football around. I mean, San Francisco's problem isn't necessarily the quarterback position, it's all the players that they have lost.
"Everybody says, 'What happened to Kap?' The quarterback position is the single most dependent position on the field. And if you don't have a running back, if you don't have an offensive line, if you don't have a defense that can stop people, if you don't have wide receivers, in today's game, if you don't have a tight end, you struggle.
"And he lost all those things over the course of two years. Plus, you've had massive retirements and injury on defense. You know, that team is basically being rebuilt from the ground up. So if I look at the quarterback situation, right now, I've got to lean towards Blaine because he's the guy that's done the most work."
