San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, one of the two quarterbacks involved in a battle for the starting job, did not participate in team drills during practice on Thursday.

The team called it a "planned day of rest" for the quarterback. Kaepernick spent the day mirroring the quarterbacks behind the line of scrimmage, much as he did prior to June's minicamp during the team's offseason program.

The 49ers have not yet named a starter for Sunday's exhibition opener against the Houston Texans. They are expected to make a decision following the team's joint-practice with the Texans on Friday.

Kaepernick is one of the players that is scheduled to meet with the media following Friday's practice.
