San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly spoke to the media today at Kezar Stadium. One interesting item that he brought up was that the team would not decide on a starting quarterback for their exhibition opener against Houston at Levi's Stadium on Sunday until after the 49ers' joint practice against Texans on Friday.


The team released their first depth chart last night with both Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick listed as co-starters for Sunday.


"We have a big week," Kelly said via Bay Area News Group. "You can say this guy starts, then he sprains his ankle in Friday's practice and then you've got to re-evaluate. We'll wait until after the Houston practice to evaluate everybody at every position, because you don't know where you're going to be until you get there."

"I'll tell you what, both guys are doing a good job," said offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins on Tuesday. "They are both competing their tails off. In the classroom, on the field, they are both doing a good job. I wouldn't say any one is ahead of the other right now. I think as we get into the preseason and we get to playing live games, those things will start happening, but right now I wouldn't say anyone is ahead of anybody. I just think they are both progressing like we want them to and both have been really good."
