Ramsey was a seventh-round selection by the 49ers out of Boston College in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Ramsey started his 49ers career on the physically unable to perform list during his first season with the team. He was released prior to the start of the 2015 season and then re-signed to the practice squad for that season. In January, he signed a future contact with the 49ers. He has never played in an NFL game.
In November, Ramsey was suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances. He had numerous injuries throughout his college career and even missed the NFL Combine and his school's Pro Day with a calf injury.
"The 49ers organization would like to thank Kaleb for his contributions to our team and our community over the last two years," said general manager Trent Baalke. "We will continue to support Kaleb and wish him well as he moves on from his career in football."
"I want to thank Jed York, the York family, Trent Baalke and all the coaches and staff I have had the pleasure of working with over the last two years," said Ramsey in a statement. "The 49ers took a chance on drafting me and made my NFL dreams come true. Unfortunately, my career has been cut short, as I have made the decision to step away from the game to concentrate on other priorities in my life. During my time in the Bay Area, I have seen how special the 49ers organization and its fans truly are, and that is something I will take with me as I move on."
Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area pointed out that Ramsey's retirement creates a roster spot for OT Anthony Davis, who has filed for reinstatement into the NFL.
The 49ers report to training camp on Saturday with their first practice taking place on Sunday.
