Regarding QB Colin Kaepernick, Kelly confirmed that he has not yet been cleared to practice with the team. "He's still in the middle of rehab," Kelly said. While he confirmed that Kaepernick has resumed throwing, that activity has taken place with the trainers on the side and not on the practice field with his teammates.
Kelly said that Kaepernick has not fallen behind in the quarterback competition. "It's not a race. Today is the first time we're going against the defense," he said. When asked if he felt pressure to name a day one starter, Kelly said, "I'll let it happen organically."

When asked about the skill sets of his players, Kelly stated that they just want talented players. "Our job as coaches is to maximize their strengths and put them in the best position to make plays," said Kelly.
The competition for returners on special teams will include WR Bruce Ellington, WR DeAndrew White, WR DeAndre Smelter, RB DuJuan Harris, and WR Bryce Treggs.
WR Anquan Boldin remains a free agent. The team has reportedly not closed the door on him returning, but both parties are taking their time on that decision. Kelly stated that, outside of the NFL Man of the Year award luncheon prior to the Super Bowl, he has not had any conversations with Boldin.
