Baalke doesn't typically close the door on any roster scenario, but it sure has looked as though the 49ers and Boldin have moved on from one another. Boldin, who will turn 36 years old in October, had stated that he would not mind returning to the 49ers, but would also like a chance to play for a contender. After all, he is entering what is likely the latter portion of his career.
Boldin visited with the Washington Redskins on March 29. "I wouldn't say that door has been shut by any stretch," Baalke told CSN Bay Area prior to the draft while discussing the possibility of Boldin returning. "But where it is, it's where it was when we left off. He's going to explore his options, and we're going to explore ours."
Boldin had 69 receptions for 789 yards and four touchdowns in 2015. That was the fewest receiving yards he has had since 2004 with the Arizona Cardinals, which was his second year in the league. Of course, those numbers were still enough to lead the team in receiving. Boldin had surpassed 1,000 yards (1,062 in 2014 and 1,179 in 2013) in each of his previous two seasons with San Francisco.
The 49ers have a pretty crowded group of wide receivers right now. They are Dres Anderson, Aaron Burbridge, Devon Cajuste, DiAndre Campbell, Bruce Ellington, Quinton Patton, Eric Rogers, Jerome Simpson, DeAndre Smelter, Torrey Smith, Bryce Treggs, and DeAndrew White.
Baalke also confirmed that QB Colin Kaepernick has resumed throwing, but has not yet been cleared to practice with the team.
