There have been no reports of progress on a contract extension for Reid, an option that general manager Trent Baalke discussed in March. That means that his rookie contract's fifth-year option would need to come into play. Because Reid was a first-round selection, his rookie contract was for four years with an option for the 49ers to pick up a fifth.
"If we can get something done longer, I think we'll look at that. We're also looking at the fifth-year option, as well. I would expect him back (in 2017) for sure, one way or another," Baalke told CSN Bay Area in March.
A fifth-year option would pay Reid $5.676 million in 2017, an amount that would become fully guaranteed in March of the same year. If picked up, the 49ers could then continue to work on a long-term extension for the safety that would keep him with the team beyond the 2017 season. If the team decided that Reid did not fit into their long-term plans, they could still release him before March of 2017.
In 2015, Reid had 60 tackles, a sack, seven passes defended, a forced fumble, and no interceptions. However, in his prior two seasons, he hauled in seven interceptions.
