With the sixth pick in the fifth round (145th overall), the San Francisco 49ers selected Georgia OT John Theus. He is the second offensive lineman selected by the 49ers. On Thursday, the team moved back into the end of the first round to select Stanford OG Joshua Garnett with the 28th overall pick.

NFL.com projected that Theus would be selected in rounds 6 or 7 of the NFL Draft.


Analysis


Lance Zierlein of NFL Media, who compares Theus to David Quessenberry, had the following to say in his scouting report:

Consistent starting tackle from the SEC who has battled against upper-­echelon college talent. While Theus has experience at both tackle spots, he may have issues in the NFL because he lacks the foot quickness of a left tackle and the power of a right tackle. He has the technique and talent to be drafted and fight for a swing tackle spot within his first two seasons, but he must add strength and mass.

DraftInsider.net had the following to say about Theus in their scouting report:

Four-year starter awarded all-Conference honors the past 2 seasons. Hard-working college lineman with a consistent game. Bends his knees, blocks with excellent leverage and quick off the snap. Stays square, fights with his hands and keeps his feet moving. Controls opponents once engaged at the point of attack and a solid position blocker. Strong enough to turn defenders from the line and open up running lanes. Theus is a try hard lineman with size as well as growth potential and the ability to be a solid run blocking right tackle.

Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus had the following to say about Theus in his scouting report:


We've done our best to dispel the right tackle only myth here at PFF, but Theus' best position in the NFL looks to be right tackle. Not because of any inherent difference in value between the position, but because he was simply better there. Theus had a -5.0 grade at left tackle the first nine weeks of the season and then posted a +2.9 grade over the rest of the season at right tackle. While playing right tackle at the Senior Bowl he had the second best win rate in one-on-ones and the second highest grade in team drills. He has some bad habits and glaring flaws that make him a late rounder at best. Namely his penchant for ducking his head into every single block he makes in both run and pass.
