Last month, 49ers regional scout Steve Rubio and outside linebackers coach Jason Tarver were at the Michigan State pro day, where Cook worked out.
During the time with Michihan State, the 6-foot-4 Cook completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 9,194 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions. He was the 2015 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner, was First-team All-Big Ten and Big Ten QB of The Year last year, and came in ninth place in Heisman Trophy voting.
Cook has won the Big Ten Championship twice (2013, 2015), earning the MVP award in each of those games, and led his team to a 2014 Rose Bowl championship, where he was also the MVP, and a 2015 Cotton Bowl championship.

2016 Combine workout: Connor Cook
Lance Zierlein of NFL Media said the following about Cook, who he compares to Brian Hoyer:
As a four-year starter, Cook has the big game experience and the production from a pro-style attack that should warrant early consideration. The concern is that his short and intermediate accuracy has never shown the improvement and consistency that scouts expected to see. His inability to take over in big games this year could hurt his cause. Cook flashes the potential of an NFL starter, but he has the makeup of game manager over playmaker.
During the NFL Scouting Combine, Cook had a 40-time of 4.79 seconds, a vertical jump of 33 inches, and a broad jump of 113 inches.
