It is not the first time that the 49ers have been interested in Smith and he would definitely fill a position of need. It is unknown how serious those discussions have been, especially given Smith's suspension last season. According to Rapoport, the Chiefs also remain in the mix to retain Smith. It is unlikely that the 49ers get into a bidding war for Smith or any free agent.
Smith, a 2009 draft selection out of Utah by the Miami Dolphins, has had 353 tackles, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles, 81 passes deflected, and a defensive touchdown over his career.
In March of 2013, Smith signed a three-year, $18 million deal with $12 million guaranteed to play for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was suspended for the first three games of the 2015 season after pleading guilty to a DUI charge last April.
