Williams, who is just 26 years old, was among five 49ers players that were scheduled to become free agents at 1 PM (PT) today, which is the start of the new league year. The four remaining free agents are WR Anquan Boldin, G Alex Boone, RB Reggie Bush, and K Phil Dawson.
Seen by many as the 49ers' top free agent talent, Williams led the defensive line in tackles in 2015. He is considered to be one of the best nose tackles in the league and finished 2015 strong.
Williams became a starter in 2014, but a broken leg ended his season after nine games. He started all 16 games for the 49ers in 2015.
Two weeks ago, the 49ers extended the contract of DT Quinton Dial by three years. That deal maxes out at $16.5 million over those three years and Dial will get $5.3 million guaranteed.
Williams joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2011.
