Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that the San Francisco 49ers have discussed Kansas City Chiefs CB Sean Smith, who will become a free agent on Wednesday. It is not the first time that the 49ers have been interested in Smith and he would definitely fill a position of need. It is unknown how serious those discussions have been, especially given Smith's suspension last season.


Smith, a 2009 draft selection out of Utah by the Miami Dolphins, has had 353 tackles, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles, 81 passes deflected, and a defensive touchdown over his career.


In March of 2013, Smith signed a three-year, $18 million deal with $12 million guaranteed to play for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was suspended for the first three games of the 2015 season after pleading guilty to a DUI charge last April. Earlier today, 95.7 The Game host John Middlekauff stated that the 49ers were discussing a possible trade for another Chief, wide receiver and return specialist De'Anthony Thomas.


"Thomas could play running back or line up in the slot, offering a similar skill set to current receiver Bruce Ellington. But even if those abilities overlap, having players with speed to rotate through the up-tempo attack could help keep each player fresh," says Chris Biderman of Niners Wire.

Seahawks OG J.R. Sweezy also appears to be on the 49ers' radar according to NFL Network's Rand Getlin. The Niner Faithful may remember him as the player with the controversial block on Ian William that broke his ankle in 2013. Of course, there is a long list of teams showing interest.
