Leonhardt, an undrafted free agent out of Bemidji State in 2013, spent time with the Oakland Raiders (2013–2014) and Cleveland Browns (2015) prior to his time with San Francisco. The 49ers signed him to the practice squad in November along with OT Donald Hawkins, who is currently with the Carolina Panthers.
Other tight ends currently on the roster include Garrett Celek, who the 49ers are reportedly trying to re-sign before he hits free agency in March, Vance McDonald, Blake Bell, Rory Anderson, who spent the 2015 season on IR, and Je'Ron Hamm. Both Bell and Anderson were draft selections last year.
