Luckily for the San Francisco 49ers, the Detroit Lions won their Monday night matchup against the New Orleans Saints, making certain that the 49ers would not drop further in their projected 2016 draft position. Last week, the 49ers were
penciled in with the fifth overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite a 24-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals,
they dropped down a spot to sixth overall based on current record and strength of schedule (SOS) if the season ended today. There was a possibility that the team could have fallen further had the Detroit Lions, who coincidentally happen to be the 49ers' next opponent, lost on Monday. They did not.
How high the team will actually select will be determined by the rest of the season and their final record. As reported earlier, the top spot is still owned by the Tennessee Titans for the second week in a row.
The undefeated Carolina Panthers still hold the final overall selection based on playoff seeding. If the season ended today, they would be the number one seed in the NFC and hold the best record in the league.
Below is the draft order, based on playoff seeding (21-32), record, and strength of schedule (SOS), for all 32 (31 if your don't count the New England Patriots) first-round spots
if the season ended today.
* New England Patriots' selection has been forfeited
** 21-32 based on projected playoff seeding, not record or strength of schedule
