Tomsula defended the decision to punt twice late in the fourth quarter while trailing 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks. He felt that the conversions would have been too long and too risky because they would have had to pass the ball. A shorter conversion would have given them the option to run or pass. That was not available to them. He felt that defensive stops gave the team a better chance at a comeback.
Tomsula said that he saw a lot of positives in the loss to the Seahawks. He felt special teams was a positive. Defensively, he indicated that there is a lot of work to do. "We've got to get it back on track," Tomsula said. He felt that problems on Sunday stemmed from a tentative approach.
When asked about QB Colin Kaepernick, Tomsula said that Monday was the first time that the coaching staff was made aware of the quarterback's shoulder soreness. Kaepernick was placed on the injured reserve list on Saturday with a torn labrum in left (non-throwing) shoulder after appearing on the injury report the day before.
While Tomsula stated that the 49ers have two veteran quarterbacks coming in today to work out for the team, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that the team only has one coming in today. A team spokesman said that there had been discussions of a second quarterback coming in as well. Tomsula would not indicate which quarterbacks the team was planning to look at.
Up next for the 49ers are the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, November 29 at Levi's Stadium. You can enter to win free tickets here.
