Niners coach Mike Nolan hired former North Carolina and Fresno State offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, 41, to replace Jim Hostler as 49ers quarterbacks coach. Hostler was promoted Wednesday to the post of offensive coordinator.
"Frank came highly recommended from people throughout all levels of college and professional football," Nolan said. "I am extremely impressed with his work ethic, attention to detail and ability to develop players. He is a perfect fit for the way we operate with the 49ers."
Cignetti and Hostler played together in the same defensive backfield at Indiana (Pa.) University. They also worked together in 2001 on the staff of the Saints, whose offensive coordinator was Mike McCarthy. Hostler was quality control coach, while Cignetti was the quarterbacks coach.
Hostler coached nine seasons under Cignetti's father, Frank Sr., at Indiana University (Pa.). Hostler was running backs coach, linebackers coach and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks during his time at Indiana.
Cignetti's family has many football ties. His father recently retired after 20 seasons as the head coach at Indiana, where he won 182 games. The elder Cignetti was also the head coach at West Virginia from 1976-79. Cignetti's brother, Curt, is the tight ends coach at NC State.
