Kaepernick has been bothered by a shoulder injury that he suffered against the Green Bay Packers on October 4. He was benched in favor of Gabbert during the week prior to the team's game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Cam Inman of The Mercury News reports that Kaepernick had a torn labrum in left (non-throwing) shoulder. He is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday in Denver, according to source
On Monday, Kaepernick reported soreness in his left shoulder. However, he was still able to practice this week. He appeared on yesterday's injury report with the shoulder injury.
The 49ers have promoted QB Dylan Thompson to the active roster to take his place.
This season, Kaepernick has passed for 1,615 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. Kaepernick's $11.9 million 2016 base salary is guaranteed for injury on April 1.
