Speculation that the 49ers might premiere their black alternates during the team's Monday Night Football opener at Levi's Stadium started when someone posted the following on Instagram.
Of course, it was made official today with Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee first reporting it.
The uniforms have been heavily scrutinized among the fans and media with people mostly either loving or hating them. There has not been much indifference. They have been called everything from intimidating to abominations. It is a big change from the team's traditional and well-known red jerseys.
The debut back in April even prompted the Oakland Raiders to poke fun at the 49ers' new duds.
The uniforms were a collaborative effort between the team and the players themselves. Quarterbacks have been wearing similar jerseys during practices for some time and players were always fond of them.
Back in April, head coach Jim Tomsula was asked about the new jerseys and said, "I told the O-line and D-line, 'You'll look thin.'"
